Species identification is essential in biological, ecological, and behavioral studies, as well as to characterize the benefits imparted by these organisms on Brazilian natural, livestock and farming ecosystems. The objective of this study was to conduct a qualitative punctual evaluation of oligochaete diversity in an area under anthropic impact with remnants of native vegetation in the State of Mato Grosso?s Pantanal (wetlands). Collections were performed in December 2007 in a pasture area with predominance of Brachiaria humidicula and clusters (islands) of native vegetation locally known as ?Cucurutis?. The area is the property of Fazenda Jauquara, located in the municipality of Barra do Bugres ? MT, Brazil. In order to find the greatest possible variety of species, soil from an area of approximately 3 m2 at a depth of 50 cm was manually dug and
screened. The specimens found were fixed in 4% formaldehyde for two months and then preserved in 70% alcohol, and were later identified at the family, genus, and species levels. Six earthworm species were identified from the collection site. Among these, four belonged to family Glossoscolecidae: Goiascolex vanzolinii, Pontoscolex (Pontoscolex) corethrurus, Opisthodrillus borellii borellii, Opisthodrillus sp.; one belonged to family Octochaetidae: Dichogaster gracilis; and one belonged to family Criodrilidae: a unknown species. |
